Buy – Sell Online Businesses & Digital Assets.
In this article, we discuss ways you can buy and sell online businesses and digital assets. We show you where to look online for small business opportunities and closing deals.
You can, design and develop an online business from scratch, by first researching and finding your niche market, choosing between providing services or selling products. Then, deciding on marketing, advertising, building email lists, and more. A lot needs to be done to kick-start your online project.
Alternatively, you can buy an established online business and take it to the next level.
Buying an existing online business speeds up the process of starting the venture. Firstly, you will save a lot of time. Secondly, you will be able to focus more importantly on matters like improving the core business and increasing growth. Finally, it may even end being cheaper if you buy at the right price instead of hiring developers, designers, and other professionals.
It has never been easier finding an online business for sale, negotiating with sellers and paying to transfer full ownership.
Let’s look at the different ways you can search for the right online business.
The Direct Method
Find a business you are passionate about, just contact the owner and ask if they be interested in selling. Don’t be surprised finding an owner wanting to retire, willing to cash out, or perhaps they just don’t have enough time to run the project. Advantages of following the direct method: saves you money paying a broker, you not competing with other buyers, and learn more about the business by talking directly with the owner.
I guess, it’s easier done if the business is local where you live, as you will be able to meet with the owner, pay and sign to close the deal.
Buying an existing business from a retiring owner can be rewarding and put you on the right path to become a successful entrepreneur.
Marketplace for buying and selling online businesses
Online marketplaces feature list of online businesses for sale, usually organised by website age, revenue, and how much profit. You can choose by price range, revenue sources and other metrics. Most listings show statistics like revenue and profit with time, web traffic, and other things included with the sale like email subscribers, support, inventory, list of suppliers, etc.
Worth mentioning here that many marketplaces are out of business especially the names you find listed in older articles. The main sites I found still in operation are the following:
- Bizbroker24 Established in 2010 as a marketplace specialised in listing and sales of websites and internet businesses. They focus on sites with transaction estimates between US$150,000+ and US$20 million. Listed companies found from the lowest asking price of $20,000 for a business with cash flow of $ 23,500 to the highest priced site of $4,5 million with a value over x2 cash flow.
- Hiwebby A marketplace for buying and selling websites, domains, apps and digital goods. There was no website for sale with verified analytics and Adsense, also missing revenue, I can only assume most businesses for sale on the platform are new websites.
- Flippa They claim to be the world’s number 1 destination for buying and selling online businesses with over 5,000 new sites and domains listed for sale every single day. On their website, its mentioned every month over $5m worth of transactions closed.
- Shopify Exchange June 2017 A new service called “Shopify exchange” announced, providing a marketplace for buyers and sellers to interact. One key advantage over other marketplaces: with Shopify exchange, a buyer can get access to the revenue and traffic data available to Shopify.
A neat solution for buyers wanting to verify sales claimed by website owners.
Worth mentioning here two more sites:
Bizbuysell They claim sold over 100,000 successful businesses and having visitor traffic over $1 Million worth of transactions each month by potential business buyers. Expect to find around 45,000 active businesses for sale.
Freemarket Freelancer Technology Pty Limited licenses the Freelancer trademark. The company headquartered in Australia. They own many marketplaces like freelancer, warrior forum, and escrow. A significant player in the marketplace business so expected to be an excellent professional service.
E-commerce forums and Social media Groups
Search e-commerce forums for online businesses and find opportunities in places like Shopify Forums, Tech and Business like Warrior Forum, and Small Business Forum, Also, worth considering WordPress forums and other sites related to your niche market. You can find many pages on google plus, Facebook and blogger with communities listing sellers of e-businesses.
Search social media groups, forums and classified sites for small businesses.
Buying an Online Business Through a Broker
Website brokers simplify the buying and selling of online businesses. Some sellers don’t have the time to deal with buyers, answering questions, dealing with technical matters, or just don’t know how to best market and sell their business. The role of the website broker is to find a buyer willing to buy at the best price and match with a seller willing to sell at a fair price. Examples:
Feinternational Founded in 2010 with the headquarters in Boston and regional offices in London and Saigon they offer M&A advisory services for mid-market e-commerce, SaaS, and content businesses. You can expect businesses listed for sale 36k and above.
Flippa’s deal flow brokerage service doesn’t accept all businesses for this program and restricts the application to businesses with proven incomes higher than a certain amount per year.
